Course Overview

Rigging operations in the offshore oil and gas industry can be extremely dangerous. An OPITO rigging course provides you with the knowledge and skills to perform these operations safely, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries.

Stage 1: Theory and Practical (Standard code 9088)

  • Initial planning of tasks
  • Environmental considerations
  • Proximity hazards
  • Attaching/detaching and securing loads
  • De-rating of equipment and quarantining
  • Pre-use and post-use inspections
  • Preparation of lifting plans
  • Understanding sling angles and their effects on tension
  • Hands-on complex rigging tasks in teams, including cross hauling and routine lifts

Stage 2: Work Based Experience

Upon completing the course, you will receive a Workplace Experience Logbook (Stage 2). This task-based logbook must be filled out during your offshore work and before your Initial Training certificate expires (within 2 years).

Stage 3 & 4: Assessment of Competency (9099 & 9199)

The 2-day assessment or reassessment is a critical evaluation without any training component. The instructor will determine if you have the competence to become a Stage 3 or Stage 4 Rigger, allowing you to carry out complex lifting operations independently.
